And David arose and went with all the people who were with him from Baale-Judah to bring up from there the ark of God, which is called by the name of the Lord of hosts who sits enthroned on the cherubim. And they carried the ark of God on a new cart and brought it out of the house of Abinadab, which was on the hill.
And Uzzah and Ahio, the sons of Abinadab, were driving the new cart, with the ark of God, and Ahio went before the ark. And David and all the house of Israel were celebrating before the Lord, with songs and lyres and harps and tambourines and castanets and cymbals.

Here is a chance for Jehovah to demonstrate some understanding in a one-on-one interaction with a faithful follower. In the Psalms, David calls Yahweh slow to anger and full of compassion. Ps But after this, how could he say such a thing? It looked like He was being petty. In Exodus God gives Moses very clear instructions regarding how the Ark should be carried. God repeated Himself how the Ark was to be transported and what would happen if they got it wrong.
After Uzzah died, they moved the Ark as the Lord prescribed. Previously Israel had always carried the Ark of the Covenant in the right way. Young's Literal Translation and the anger of Jehovah burneth against Uzzah, and God smiteth him there for the error, and he dieth there by the ark of God.

In 2 Samuel 6 we find some more details since it records the same event. Here is a portion of the passage. But when they came to the threshing floor of Nacon, Uzzah reached out toward the ark of God and took hold of it, for the oxen nearly upset it.
